Speak to Me, Lord

Yesterday was “Children’s Musical Day” at our church! It is always the most fun thing to watch our children in action. As a friend put it this morning on her blog, “it felt good and right to be sitting in a service where children danced and sang and laughed and forgot lines and dressed up like shepherds and cried on the front row. That felt right. Amidst a society of Xbox 360, MTV, cell phones and texting - it seemed particularly nice to see children do what it is children do best.”

We have quite the talented bunch of young ‘uns and one worship leader’s son (who shall remain nameless) gave a flawless performance as Mr. Bucksby, the local mall manager! His beautiful daughter also praised God with the dance – a beautiful ballet with some friends. And my “all I want for Christmas is my two front teeth daughter” worshipped with her voice - with everything she had! It was so great!

One of the worship songs that the children sang and one that my darling daughter went to bed singing last night is called “Speak to Me, Lord.”

“Speak to me, Lord, I am listening.
I want to hear what You say.
Call my name, Lord, and I will run to You.
Your Word is my way.
Give me the ears to hear You.
Give me the eyes to see.
And in the stillness let me know its Your Voice whispering my name.
I will run to You. Speak to me.”

So simple of a message and yet in the hustle and bustle of this Christmas season and what we tend to make it, His Voice can seem a bit faint.

“In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word…” Hebrews 1:1-3a

Just as I asked you last week to live expecting to see Jesus during this season, I want to give you another challenge – live expecting to hear Jesus during this season.

Sometimes when I want my children to listen to me above all of the noise and craziness that is The House of Cook, I stop yelling above the noise. I look at them and I say their name in a lower, almost whispering voice. It works every single time! They stop what they are doing and they lean in to hear what I am trying to say to them.

I believe that during these “last days” and especially during these busy, busy days of the Christmas season, Jesus is looking at His children and whispering our names. He is asking us to do one thing as we go about our celebrations and festivities over the course of the coming weeks – “listen for My voice.”

What is Jesus wanting you to hear Him say this Christmas season? Could it be that He just wants you to walk with Him, talk with Him, look for Him and lean on Him?

Run to Him…He is speaking to You today!

"Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me--watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly." (Matthew 11:28-30 The Message)

Have a blessed week...listening for Him!
